The Bit Wrap That's About to Change Your Morning Routine 🍎

There are products that do one quiet, useful thing really well. The Sprenger SoftBit Latex Bit Wrap is one of them.

It wraps around your horse's bit. It makes it softer. It makes it kinder. And if your horse has ever been difficult to bridle, reluctant to accept the bit, tight through the jaw at the start of a ride, or simply not quite as willing as you'd like — this little roll of latex is worth knowing about.

What it actually does

The SoftBit Latex Bit Wrap is a self-adhesive, elastic latex bandage that wraps directly around the mouthpiece of any bit. It creates a soft, cushioned surface that reduces pressure points and chafing, and moulds to the individual shape of the bit — which means it works on snaffles, Weymouths, bridoons, pelhams, or anything else you have in the tack room.

The result is a bit that feels noticeably softer in the horse's mouth without changing the mechanics of how it works. The bit action stays the same. The communication between hand and mouth stays the same. The horse just has a much more pleasant experience of the whole thing.

Plain or Apple — and why the Apple one is special

The SoftBit comes in two versions — plain latex, and apple flavoured latex — and while both do exactly the same job mechanically, the apple one deserves a moment of its own.

The apple flavour isn't just a gimmick. For horses that are reluctant to accept the bit — the ones that throw their head, clamp their teeth, or take an age to settle before you've even started — giving them a reason to reach for the bit changes everything. Instead of the bit being something to resist or tolerate, it becomes something to seek. And that shift in attitude, however small it starts, tends to carry through into the whole warm-up.

We'll be honest: we were quietly excited about this one from the moment we saw it. And our instinct is that the apple version in particular is going to fly.

Who it suits

The SoftBit Latex Bit Wrap is particularly well suited to:

Young horses being introduced to the bit for the first time — a softer, apple-scented first experience sets a very different tone than cold metal.

Horses that have had negative experiences with bitting and carry tension or reluctance as a result — the softness and flavour together help rebuild a more positive association.

Sensitive-mouthed horses that chafe easily or develop soreness at the corners of the mouth — the cushioned layer protects those areas meaningfully.

Horses that are tight or resistant at the start of work — the acceptance encouraged by the apple flavour often translates into a more relaxed, willing start to the session.

Any horse, really, whose rider would love a slightly warmer welcome when the bridle comes out.

How to apply it

Starting from the outside of each side of the bit, wrap inward with light tension and a small overlap, working toward the centre of the mouthpiece. You're aiming for an even, stable layer — not too thick, not too loose. Done well, it sits neatly and stays put through a full ride.

Replace it at the first sign of wear, and if you're using the apple version, get the best flavour effect by using it within two weeks of opening. After that, wrap it tightly in cling film and store it somewhere cool and dry.

The detail that matters

100% non-toxic latex. Self-adhesive. Works on any bit. Comes with two rolls per pack. Made in Germany by Sprenger, who have been making equestrian equipment since 1872 and don't put their name on things that don't work.

The SoftBit Latex Bit Wrap — plain and apple flavoured — is available now at Bit Bank Australia.
